ALDER STREAM TOWNSHIP — The cause of a fire Sunday at a camp on Route 27 appears to be accidental, Fire Chief Sprague Wise said Tuesday.

An investigator from the Office of the State Fire Marshal checked the scene Tuesday, he said, and wants to speak again to the owner, Ron Clark of Waldoboro.

Wise said Clark was fishing and his wife was at a fire pit when she turned around and saw the fire just before 4 p.m. Sunday. A barbecue grill on the back deck was being used to cook, he said.

Unable to get cellphone reception, Clark’s wife went to a neighboring camp to call for help.

The porch and a back bedroom were destroyed, but the main portion of the log cabin may be salvageable, Wise said.

Clark has owned the camp, known as Camp 27,  for about 30 years, Wise said. It is south of Sarampus Falls rest area and is insured, he said.

Eustis Fire Department responded to the scene, which is about 15 miles north of Stratton, along with Carrabassett Valley and Rangeley fire departments.
