Isabelle Thomas is Commended Student

FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue High School Principal Bruce Mochamer announces Isabelle Thomas has been named a Commended Student in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program.

A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to Thomas.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for Nation Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Reiki clinic for those impacted by cancer

NORWAY — A free Reiki clinic for people in treatment for cancer, cancer survivors and caregivers will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Norway Town Office.

A reservation for individual session is required and may be made by contacting 207-890-7063 before noon Friday, Oct. 21.

Reiki is gentle touch that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, helps relieve pain and may help improve sleep. Reiki is not a substitute for any medical care or treatment.

Kingfield plans spooky Halloween

KINGFIELD — Halloween will come to life early with ghost stories, a haunted house and reenactments. 

The event will start at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, with a reenactment of October 1869’s Pumpkin Freshet on the Carrabassett River.

Things then move to the Herbert Hotel for a ghost story table talk. Then participants will take a short walk to hear about haunted houses, visit a talking pumpkin, watch an amazing fire spinner and a witches’ dance.

They may stop at Governor King’s mansion for more ghost stories and finish at the Riverside Cemetery for ghostly encounters with some of Kingfield’s notable and long gone citizens.

Rummage sale planned in Strong

STRONG — The Strong United Methodist Parish House annual Fall Rummage Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. 

The sale will include baked goods, candy, a white elephant table, toys, books, puzzles and lots of rummage.

A luncheon will be served from 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m.

Psychic medium to visit library

RUMFORD — Lisa Severy, medium and mystic seer, will lead a group reading at noon on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Rumford Public Library. 

The event is free and open to the public.

Jones Dance Band to perform

PARIS — A dance with music by the Jones Dance Band will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 and 29, at American Legion Hall, 12 Church St.
