LEWISTON — Electrical wires accidentally pulled during a digging project on Wednesday cut power to the Lewiston Memorial Armory and will likely leave it in the dark for two days, according to Lewiston Public Works Director Dave Jones.

Four school classrooms have been temporarily moved into the nearby Lewiston Middle School and programs at the Senior Center and Recreation Department have been put on hold.

“We’d been having some problems with groundwater and stormwater infiltrating the basement of the armory,” Jones said. To fix that, crews were installing a new basin to tie into an existing storm drain.

“We did our Dig Safe, (but) apparently electrical service for the building wasn’t marked,” he said. “When they were digging, they ended up yanking the service, which caused the power to go out. We’ve got to replace all the wire from the building all the way out to the transformer up on the pole.”

That wire for the repair is in Connecticut.

“We don’t have that until tomorrow morning, so it’s very likely that the armory is going to be closed not just (Wednesday) but all day (Thursday) as well,” Jones said.
