Attracting good jobs at good wages would give us the base needed to tackle other pressing problems. I want the income tax eliminated and energy prices lowered and will introduce legislation and/or support legislation to effect that. I also believe a better job could be done selling Mainers’ work ethic.

Gov. Paul LePage wants to eliminate the state income tax. Do you support that? If not, why not?

Yes. We border a state with no income tax [or sales tax] and it costs us dearly. Fair or not, people who can afford to live outside of Maine for six months and a day and we lose sales tax, excise tax, etc., on them. 100 percent of nothing is nothing.

Are you willing to support raising the fuel tax to fix Maine roads? If not, why not?

No. And I will be investigating why the present tax is not sufficient.

The relationship between the governor and the Legislature has deteriorated over the past six years. What can the Legislature do to improve that relationship?

I consider the governor a friend. I haven’t agreed with everything he’s done, or everything he’s said, but I’ve never questioned his motives. Maybe the Legislature could entertain the possibility that he wants what’s best for Maine and go from there?

What methods do you support to reduce opiate addiction in Maine?

More emphasis on treatment. We need the threat of law to convince people to seek treatment, but jail should be a last resort. I lost a son to an overdose, so this is of particular importance to me.
