UMaine Extension’s ‘Cooking for Crowds’

PARIS — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer two opportunities to take “Cooking for Crowds — Food Safety Training for Volunteer Cooks.”

The courses are scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, May 3 and 10, at UMaine Extension in Oxford County, 9 Olson Road.

The workshop offers up-to-date information on how to handle, transport, store and prepare foods safely for large group functions such as soup kitchens, church suppers, food pantries and community fundraisers. Participants will receive “Cooking for Crowds,” a manual specifically designed for volunteer cooks, certificate of attendance, posters, and an instant-read thermometer. This class meets the Good Shepherd Food-Bank food safety training requirements.

The $15 fee includes materials.

Easter candy, bake sale

WAYNE — An Easter candy and bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on two Saturdays, April 8 and 15, at the Williams House, 14 Old Winthrop Road.

Jan Folk and her team are gearing up to make chocolate bunnies, ducks, eggs, chocolate lollipops, chocolate covered cherries, an assortment of bars, turtles, peanut butter cups and more.

The chocolates, a Wayne tradition for more than 25 years, sell quickly. To be sure of a good selection, shoppers should come early. Folk will also fill special orders placed before April 1 by contacting 207-685-4390.

In addition to handmade chocolates, there will be a variety of homemade baked goods, a spring boutique table and gently used books.

The Friends of the Cary Memorial Library are organizing the sale, and all proceeds will benefit the library.

RCAM offering gardening program

LEEDS — The Rural Community Action Ministry Gardening Services is a hunger prevention program that works to encourage and assist individuals and families that are experiencing financial hardship in an effort to eliminate hunger and improve nutrition by helping them to grow and preserve their own food.

The program will provide seeds, seedlings, tilling, information and site visits to support successful food production.

Gardening Services will be available to the towns of Buckfield, Canton, Greene, Hartford, Leeds, Litchfield, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Monmouth, Sabattus, Sumner, Turner, Wales and Wayne.

The RCAM Gardening program is gearing up for this year’s busy season assisting families in the 14 towns serviced by this agency. Seeds have been ordered and delivered to RCAM and sorted into individual packages getting ready for distribution to gardeners. Seedlings are again being grown for distribution with the seeds in May and June.

Heroin, opiate epidemic information 

NAPLES — The Lake Region Substance Abuse Coalition, under the umbrella of the SAD 61 and 72 Adult Education Lake Region and Fryeburg, will present a two-hour heroin and opiate epidemic information session for free.

The LRSAC will do a guided presentation with Q & A covering the major topics of education, prevention, treatment and enforcement as well as a little hard science about opioid dependence.

All persons affiliated with youth groups, human service professionals, community organizers, parents, students and any concerned citizens are encouraged to attend.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, at the Lake Region High School auditorium.
