LEWISTON — Saturday’s April snowstorm delivered 7.5 inches to Lewiston, 13.5 inches in Gray and 10.9 inches in Portland, said National Weather Service meteorologist Chris Legro.

Locally, motorists and snow movers handled the late-season storm with few problems, officials said.

“The crews did great today,” Public Works Director David Jones said. “We had a few minor breakdowns, but our mechanics did a great job getting the plows back on the road.”

By 5 p.m., after clearing roads, sidewalk plows were working on their routes, Jones said.

Early Saturday and throughout the day, there was a string of vehicle accidents on the Maine Turnpike, where the speed was reduced to 45 miles per hour.

In the Oxford region, there were a rash of crashes and vehicles off the road. The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office had no official reports or numbers available Saturday night.

But in Lewiston, Police Department Lt. Kelly Hamel said the storm didn’t cause major problems.

“Since 7 a.m., we’ve had four accidents,” Hamel said. “That’s a typical day. That’s not out of the ordinary for a warm July day.”

By 9 p.m. in Lewiston, snowfall was reduced to a snow shower.

Public Works is hoping it’s all over,” Jones said. “They’re ready for warm weather. Like everyone else, we are tired of this long winter” and hoping Saturday is the last snow.

“I wish I could say that,” Legro said.

The National Weather Service forecast shows Sunday will be pleasant, temperatures in the mid-40s and sunny. But more snow is expected late Monday and Tuesday.
