Dish gardens for a good cause

AUBURN — The Dream Team’s annual Fairy Dish Garden fund-raiser event begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, at the American Legion. All proceeds will benefit patient care and support at Androscoggin Home Care & Hospice’s Hospice House.

Fairy gardens are created in a potted dish and feature a miniature landscape and figurines. Families who attend can work together on one garden or create several of them.

The cost is $25 per garden which includes instructions, supplies, and snacks.

The Dream Team is comprised of family, friends, staff, volunteers, and other supporters of the Hospice House. All of the funds raised throughout the year are donated at the annual Hospice House 5K and Remembrance Walk in Auburn, which takes place on May 21 this year.

Buckfield Historical Society Meeting

BUCKFIELD — The Buckfield Historical Society will meet Thursday, May 11, at the Buckfield Town Hall. Social Hour starts at 6 p.m., and the meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Patricia Shearman, Register of Deeds, will be the guest speaker. Shearman will talk about the Prince Family, Family Register of Deeds, and Protecting Records.

Mineral conference May 12

NEWRY — The fifth Annual New England Mineral Conference will be held from Friday to Sunday, May 12 to 14, at the Grand Summit Resort Hotel & Conference Center at Sunday River.

The first day of the conference is Education Day, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be mineral displays, dealer rooms, and educational stations, which will be free to see for the public.

Additional offerings at the conference require registration and include educational lectures, auctions, and a Sunday field trip.

Canton Catchphrase Contest

CANTON — The town of Canton will be accepting submissions for a catchphrase, tag-line, slogan, or town motto that captures the town’s spirit, until noon on May 12. The prize is a $25 gift card.

Canton citizens past and present are welcome to submit catchphrases. There is no limit on entries.

Five entries will be selected and put on Facebook for a community vote. The winner will be announced at the Town Meeting on June 15.

Post office food drive

FARMINGTON — Carriers at the Farmington Post Office are holding their annual food drive on Saturday, May 13.

Farmington residents can place non-perishable food items in their mailboxes. The letter carrier will pick them up and deliver them to a local food bank.

There will also be a food drop in the lobby of the Post Office from Wednesday, May 10 to May 13.

RCAM seeks volunteers

LEEDS — Rural Community Action Ministry saw 119 volunteers provide 3,593 hours in a variety of capacities in 2016, including driving individuals to medical appointments, assisting with minor home repairs, working and sharing their gardening skills, summer work groups, and more.

RCAM is seeking volunteers to continue to meet local needs in the community.

‘Fresh Air moms,’ families needed

NEW YORK CITY, New York — With Mother’s Day approaching, the Fresh Air Fund is seeking “Fresh Air moms” and families to host inner city children from New York in their rural homes. 

Each summer, nearly 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban and small town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. First-time Fresh Air children are boys and girls ages 7 to 12.

Children who are reinvited by host families may continue with the Fresh Air Fund through age 18 and can benefit from extended trips.
