WWII veteran to speak  

HARRISON — John DiPretoro will speak on his World War II experiences at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, at the Caswell Conservancy Center.

DiPretoro will share his experiences of being a naval aviator, manning a World War II torpedo bomber in the Pacific Theater from late 1944 to early 1945. DiPretoro took part in the battle of the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines, considered the largest naval battle of the war.

DiPretoro enlisted in 1942 at age 18 and served until 1963, retiring from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander.

A video will be shown of the experiences of Hebert Crowell as a member of the Army Air Corps. He was shot down over Europe in World War II.

Refreshments will be served.

Cold cash for Wilton ice-out guess

WILTON — Bruce Dyke, member of the Wilton Fish & Game and caretaker of the annual Wilson Lake Ice-Out Contest, has annouced that Bill Fletcher of Wilton is the recipient of $100 for his guess of when the ice would go out on Wilson Lake.

The guess was nearest to the date documented by Dyke: 9 a.m. on April 29.

Lions Club seeks donations for sale

WILTON — The Wilton Lions Club is seeking donations for its annual yard sale, which will be held Friday to Sunday, June 23 to 25, next to the Big Apple on Routes 2 and 4.

Lions will pick up the items and provide a receipt for tax deduction, upon request.
