Could this be Lewiston-Auburn’s own battle of the bands?

Country artist Granger Smith will perform in Simard-Payne Memorial Park at 7 p.m. Wednesday, rain or shine, for $20-$25 per ticket.

At the same time, just across the river at Festival Plaza, the Auburn Community Concert Band will perform for free.

“The Auburn Community Band has been performing every Wednesday night, every summer, at Festival Plaza for the last 36 years. That’s not going to change,” band director Milt Simon said.

He said the only reason they would change would be “inclement weather.” In that case, the performance would be moved to the rain location at the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston.

“I hope the sound doesn’t interfere with us,” Simon said. “Our show will go on as usual.”

Simon said the Granger Smith concert must have been scheduled without knowledge of the community band performing at the same time.

“If he’s by himself, it might not be too loud, but if he plays with a big band it’ll be louder,” Simon said.

Milt Simon, center, directs the Auburn Community Concert Band at Festival Plaza in Auburn on July 5 during the band’s evening summer concert.
