Disabilities conference Sept. 26-27

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Speaking Up for Us, a statewide self-advocacy organization for people living with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities, will hold its annual statewide conference on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 26 and 27, at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.

People with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities are invited. For those who are not a member of SUFU, the conference is a way to meet other people with disabilities who share a passion for working together to make Maine a great place to live for people with disabilities.

This year’s theme is “Freedom of Choice,” representing the ability to live the life desired. Keynote speaker will be Nancy Cronin, executive director of the Maine Developmental Disabilities Council. Workshops will also be offered.

Old Church on the Hill open

BUCKFIELD — The Old Church on the Hill on High Street will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, and Monday, Sept. 4, as part of the celebration of Buckfield Community Day.

On display will be handmade vintage clothing and textiles.

Go Gold for Childhood Cancer event

BETHEL — September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To bring more awareness of the disease, Team Hailey Hugs will kick off the month with a Go Gold for Childhood Cancer event from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Common on Broad Street.

Activities will start with a parade using “gold” as the theme. There will be speakers, and Gov. Paul LePage will present a proclamation declaring September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month before children attending who have battled and continue to battle cancer and for who have lost the battle

There will be vendors, food, bands playing throughout the day and a live auction. Surprise entertainers will make an appearance and fireworks will end the activities.

Bottle drive helping scholarship fund 

SUMNER — A bottle drive to support Sumner scholarship fund will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, in the vestry at the West Sumner Universalist Church.

The drive will coincide with a barbecue buffet. 

Contra dance on Sept. 2

BRYANT POND — A contra dance will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at the Franklin Grange, 32 Main St., Route 26.

Music will be performed by the Better Late Than Never Band with Cynthia Phinney calling.

Cost to attend is $8 or $20 maximum for a family. Beginners are welcome with or without a partner.

Dancers should bring clean shoes for dancing.

Knitting guild to meet

PARIS — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Maurice’s Restaurant, Main Street.

This is the guild’s birthday celebration. Those attending should bring items to put in the guild’s fair exhibit.
