100 years ago, 1918
At the meeting of the Ad Men’s Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce held in the Chamber of Commerce rooms, Friday, it was decided to have the “Made in Lewiston-Auburn Week” as planned. Arrangements are completed and the Ad Men are going ahead with a vim and enthusiasm that cannot help but make the week a great success. It was suggested at the meeting that prizes be offered, but the suggestion did not meet with general favor and was dropped.

50 years ago, 1968
Corpswomen at the Poland Spring Job Corps Center for Women will have an opportunity to look at Center operations from an administrative point of view today when student government representatives take part in a turnabout day with staff. Offices will continue to function as usual on Student Government Day but the Corpswomen will have a chance to see first-hand the kinds of problems that can come up during a routine work day. Robert G. Lake, director of the Center operated by Economic Systems Corporation, noted that an occasion like this gives the girls the kind of responsibility and involvement with Center activities that they are so eager to have.

There’s no limit to the real-life, hands-on community planning projects youngsters could gel involved In, from assessing neighborhood playground needs to researching water quality issues. That’s the theory behind “Kids as Planners,” a concept that’s been enthusiastically embraced by the Twin Cities’ chief planners and Cooperative Extension staff. Consultants for local projects are available through the Maine Association of Planners and the Office of Comprehensive Planning. And various funding sources exist nationwide, The question is, Can Kids as Planners fly in Lewiston-Auburn? A group of about 20 planners, educators, public officials and business people met at the Extension office Thursday to test the waters and brainstorm some possible project ideas.
