POLAND — Recreation Director Scott Segal told selectmen Tuesday night that that Camp Connor staff, and particularly Director Paige Brousseau, are to be commended for their work this summer.

The town purchased the former Auburn-Lewiston YMCA summer camp on Lower Range Pond last November and instituted a nine-week day camp for Poland children in grades one through eight.

The youth summer recreation program had been based at Poland Community School. 

Brousseau will leave the department to finish her master’s degree this winter and begin her career as an occupational therapist. She said the camp has offered children a wide variety of outdoor experiences. 

The camp has a main lodge, sports field, dock and buoy system in the lake, and beachfront area.

Segal said the camp is looking to hire four additional staff members, primarily as lifeguards, next year. The additional staff would require the resident fee to go up $30, from $130 to $160.

Segal also said the 2019 Campership Fund program will be underway shortly to raise money for families who need financial help to send their children to camp.

Town Manager Matthew Garside applauded Segal’s efforts at raising $17,000 for renovations and coordinating volunteered laborers to make the camp safe and up to code.

In other  business, selectmen:

Appointed Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Printup as fire rescue chief, succeeding Mark Bosse, who is retiring in November;

• Rejected a proposal to install a fire hydrant on Route 26 using money from tax increment financing funds; and

• Were informed that the Maine Department of Transportation will have to do field study next spring before a four-way stop at Harris Hill Road and Poland Corner Hill can be considered.
