MECHANIC FALLS — The Town Council on Monday approved a request by Police Chief Jeff Goss to buy Tasers for all five officers.

Goss said the agreement with Axon Enterprises includes purchasing five Tasers, holsters, unlimited cartridges and batteries.

The department has only one Taser, a device that gives an electric shock to out-of-control people.

The agreement will cost $1,975 a year, with the first year’s payment coming from the civil assets fund, which contains proceeds legally confiscated from criminal activity.

Goss said there is between $3,000 and $4,000 in the fund. The remaining four years will be budgeted by the Police Department.

The council also approved having its monthly meetings videod and posted on the town website several days after the meetings. The video equipment was included in this year’s municipal budget.

Julie Ward was appointed motor vehicle agent for the town. She will be responsible for registering vehicles and collecting the excise tax.

Town Clerk Miranda Hinkley said about 75 percent of the business at the office counter deals with vehicle registration and tax payments.

The council will hold a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in the Council Chamber to establish short- and long-range plans for town administration. The workshop is open to the public.
