RUMFORD — A replica of the Town Hall clock tower has been created in the brickwork below the front steps on Congress Street as part of the $5.9 million improvements on The Island business district.

“It’s the first piece of artwork in the downtown,” Town Manager Linda-Jean Briggs said.

The clock hands on the replica are at 9 o’clock, because that was the traditional time the Fire Department blew the whistle at the station.

Money for the pavers used for the replica was taken from the downtown infrastructure project and offset the cost of concrete that would be have been used and donated labor.

The work was completed Wednesday by Roger White, owner of White’s Yardworks, and employees Chris DeSalle and Dale Korhonen Sr.

“I got to do a project we’ve talked about doing for a few years now,” White said. “We always thought this would look good in front of the Town Hall. And with the construction, the time was right to do this.”

“This is just a way of giving back to the town,” he said.
