100 Years Ago: 1921

A nine-year-old pianist, giving unaided, so far as the musical numbers were concerned, a recital that lasted an hour, is a bit out of the ordinary. But when the youthful musician holds a good-sized audience in breathless interest for every minute of that time — well, the performance can truthfully be called unique. Some of the friends of little Lucienne Bedard of Lewiston, who have heard her playing, call her “Little Mozart ” for like that great composer Lucienne began to play before she had any instruction.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Air Force Master Sergeant Roy B. Crossman, son of Mr. and Mrs. William J. Crossman of 146 Gamage Ave., Auburn, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal at Clark AB, Philippines, Sergeant Crossman distinguished himself as a communications technician with Thirteenth Air Force headquarters at Clark. He was cited for “outstanding professional skill and job knowledge which contributed to the success of the Air Force mission in Southeast Asia.” The 13th AF is a major component of the Pacific Air Forces, headquarters for ally operations in Southeast Asia, the Far East and the Pacific area. The sergeant is a 1946 graduate of Edward Little High School, Auburn. His wife, Betty, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald F. Varnam of Bowman Street, Hallowell.

25 Years Ago: 1996

The Village Maine-iacs, a Department 56 collectors’ club, will hold a monthly meeting at the United Methodist Church on Park Avenue at 2 p.m. Sunday. Old and new members are welcome.
