LIVERMORE — At least one person was seriously hurt Tuesday afternoon after a car and truck collided on state Route 4 near the intersection with state Route 108.

Emergency crews were called about 3 p.m. for a report of a collision and multiple people injured. Police said four people were hurt in the wreck and the truck landed on its roof.

A Mexico woman reported on social media that her 10-year-old son and his grandparents survived the crash. The boy’s grandfather had to be extricated from his mangled car before the three were taken to a Lewiston hospital.

Shayna Lee reported that her son, Kaden, had walked out of the wreckage with relatively minor injuries.

“He’s got scrapes and bruises from the seat belt,” she said later Tuesday afternoon. The boy was discharged later that night. Among his injuries was a cracked collar bone, his mother said.

The condition of the truck driver was unknown. One witness reported the man had crawled out a window of his overturned pickup and that he appeared to be conscious and alert.

Sue Dutil Winslow of Livermore described seeing the crash unfold ahead of her.

“I was behind the truck headed north and I noticed he swerved into the other lane and there was a van going south that had to go close to the ditch and I was looking to see what the truck was trying to avoid,” she said Tuesday afternoon. “All of a sudden all I saw was like an explosion and slammed my brakes on, I could not believe what I was seeing. When the vehicles hit all I saw was a big fire and the truck landed on its roof. And the car was on fire.

“The guy in the truck crawled out of the passenger side window,” Winslow said, “and said he could not breath. The lady driving the car got out of the car and said please help get my husband out of the car. The rest is really a blur.”

Winslow said the 10-year-old-boy stumbled out of the wreckage, dazed but not seriously hurt.

“I do have to say that the 10-year-boy somehow got out of the car and walked to the guardrail and that is when I got him into my car,” she said. “He was so brave and was in shock. He never cried … Bless his heart.”

Injuries were described by state police as “moderate to serious.”

Deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office quickly closed off a stretch of Route 4 between Canton and Boothby roads as fire and rescue teams responded.

Police were also rerouting traffic along nearby Bear Pond Road and other streets in the area as additional emergency crews were requested from Turner and Farmington.

A state police reconstruction team was requested due to the seriousness of the injuries, police said. State police were heading an investigation into the cause of the crash. Troopers remained at the scene later Tuesday.

The crash occurred just past Long Green Variety near where Route 4 meets Route 108. At the store, employees said they didn’t witness the crash, but that traffic was snarled in the area in the aftermath.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Trooper Nicholas Watson at 207-624-7076, option 9, or nicholas.e.watson@maine.gov.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, the Livermore Fire Department, the Turner Fire Department, and NorthStar Rescue were assisting at the scene.
