Rumford Public Library is challenging its patrons to participate in the Reading Spree ’23.

Readers will fill in a worksheet with the names of the books they read, giving them the chance to earn and win gift cards to local establishments.

The reading challenge is a follow up to the 2022 reading challenge, Read Thru ’22. The final prize, a $25 gift certificate to a local establishment, was won by Beverly Dunst, according to a news release from Abby Austin, library circulation supervisor.

The worksheet to this year’s annual reading challenge, designed by local author Katrina Ray-Saulis, looks like a bookcase. It gives readers the chance to fill in the names of up to 100 books on the book spines that they have read this year.

A $5 gift card to a Rumford establishment will be awarded to any reader who completes the first shelf of books. Readers may show their worksheet any time during 2023.

Those who read all five rows of books will be entered into a drawing to win either a $25 gift card to a local establishment of the winners choosing or a new book of equal to or lesser value and an RPL tote bag.

The deadline for entry is Thursday, Dec. 28, and the drawing will be on Friday, Dec. 29. The winner does not need to be present to win.

Participants must be library patrons older than 12. Books read as part of other RPL reading challenges may be counted toward the Read Thru ’22 challenge.

The worksheets will be available at the library throughout the year; there is no deadline to enroll in the challenge.

Ray-Saulis wrote “By the River,” a book of short stories, which is available to be checked out at the library.
