While many people are still pulling their lives back together from the wind and rainstorm last month, I wanted to make sure that those who have been assisting and helping since we were deluged with water and storm damage are recognized for their Samaritan-like acts of compassion for their fellow townspeople.
Ordinary citizens were helping neighbors and strangers. Many opened their homes to house families and pets that were in danger of rising waters or suffering from flooding basements. Some manned generators and sump pumps, or drove people to safety. Landlords opened vacant apartments so those needing shelter had a place to go.
Our first responders and other public employees worked round the clock for days to mitigate the emergencies created by the unusual flooding. Some doing so while their own homes were in danger. Sadly, we did lose lives to the situation, but others were saved.
I thank everyone here in the greater Mexico-River Valley area for taking care of each other during this crisis.
