A presidential election featuring the two oldest candidates in history is an occasion to reflect on the different ways people age.

Donald Trump has chosen the aging-with-bitterness route. Unable to get over the slights he imagines he’s received from the professionals who form the backbone of our government, who have served through administrations of both parties, he’s focused on avenging himself by replacing them with political appointees.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, has chosen the mellowing-with-experience route. He balances considerations and seeks middle paths and compromises. He stays faithful to the long history we have with our allies. He hires smart people and then gets out of their way.

We hired him and his experience four years ago to bring some calm and stability after the chaos and venality of the Trump years. It seems to me we are still in need of that kind of leadership.
