DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a volunteer with Rebuilding Together Lewiston/Auburn and am wondering if you could help us with finding homes to renovate this year. The nonprofit organization is supported entirely by contributions of time, labor, material and money. We are dedicated to repairing homes of those who, due to financial hardship, age and/or disability, cannot do the work themselves. Skilled and unskilled volunteers alongside able-bodied members of the recipient’s family and friends complete the repairs at no cost to the homeowner.

The work is conducted on one weekend a year. This year Rebuilding Day is May 11. We will be accepting house applications until March 31. Applications can be found on our website at: www.rebuildingtogetherla.org. You can also contact us at rebuildingtogetherla@gmail.com and request one to be sent via mail. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are also needed. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us through the email address above, or call 207-344-3232. No name, Lewiston

ANSWER: Readers, this looks like a good opportunity for people looking for ways to volunteer or perform community service for a valuable outcome.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Seeing how helpful Sun Spots has been in the past, we are reaching out for donations of unwanted teacups, saucers and coffee cups (without advertisements) as people are cleaning and organizing their homes. We are a group of volunteers who recently started The Sunshine Club at the Auburn Senior Center. We make flower arrangements and deliver them to area nursing homes to bring a little sunshine and cheer to the residents. If you would like to participate, join our club, make a donation or have any comments or questions, please contact Renee at (207) 333-6601, ext. 2108. Thank you. — No name, no town

ANSWER: We hope you get a spring shower of donations. What a lovely idea.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: We would appreciate your help in getting the word out about our next volunteer training. Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin has an urgent need for volunteers to serve as tutors and English conversation partners. We have many new adult students who have a critical need to work on their education and their English-speaking skills. A 10-hour tutor training workshop will be held over two consecutive days: Thursday, March 28, and Friday, March 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at USM/LA College, 51 Westminster St., Lewiston. A two-hour English Conversation Partners virtual training session also will be held in March, with the date to be determined to fit the schedule of the participants.

We are looking for tutors with a variety of skills, but we have a particular need for people who are comfortable teaching beginners and individuals who speak a little Spanish, Portuguese, or French. If you are age 21 or older, have at least a 12th-grade reading level, are patient, organized and a good listener, you can be a Literacy Volunteer. Registration is required. For information call 753-6658, or email literacy@literacyvolunteersandro.org. Details can also be found on our website at http://www.literacyvolunteersandro.org. — Tahlia Chamberlain, director, Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin.
