SABATTUS — The town is looking at an annual meeting in late May or possibly June while town leaders scramble to get key positions filled amid a string of resignations.
Most recently, Laura Clifford was announced Tuesday night as the newest member of the Select Board. Clifford, who runs the town farmers market, was elected to replace Jean Paul Curran, who left the board recently after serving for a decade.
It was not clear Wednesday why Curran stepped down.
Holly Weymouth, with an accounting background, was recently selected as town treasurer to replace Amy Duquette who left in October.
The town finds itself in the odd situation where the positions of both police chief and town manager are filled on a temporary basis.
The interim town manager is Stephen Eldridge, who has served in the same role in several area towns, including Lisbon, Bethel, Rumford and Greene.
Eldridge has agreed to work three days a week for Sabattus and remain for six months — and perhaps longer if necessary.
The police chief position is held by David Kurz, who came aboard on an interim basis in late 2024.
Kurz has served with a variety of departments since his career began in 1974. From 1996 to 2020, he was police chief in Durham, New Hampshire.
Eldridge and Kurz were brought in in 2024 after the resignation of Eric Baker, who had been serving as police chief and temporary town manager. Baker had been working in Sabattus since 2022. When he resigned near the end of 2024, he said he was stepping down “to do what is best for myself and my family.”
The town has been struggling to fill both positions since.
Eldridge said the search for a permanent police chief is ongoing and the department is struggling with staffing issues.
“We have lost officers recently and have one new one that needs to go to the academy,” he said, referring to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro.
The town is also putting together union contracts for police, fire and public works departments.
Meanwhile, the search for a permanent town manager is in the hands of the Select Board.
As of Wednesday, a date for the town’s annual meeting had not been set.
Eldridge said they are in the process of getting a 2025-26 budget updated and ready for review.
Much of the turmoil in Sabattus can be traced back to the spring of 2024 when Town Manager Timothy Kane abruptly resigned two weeks after the resignation of longtime Selectman Mark Duquette.
The next Sabattus Select Board meeting is scheduled for March 18 at 6:30 p.m.
