AUBURN — NAPA Auto Parts’ men’s softball team opened its season in the Auburn Players League Upper Division with an 8-7 win over fierce rival Haggerty Construction at Pettingill Park.
Haggerty started the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first, but NAPA answered immediately scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame. The first four batters reached base, including an RBI single by Wayne Usher, followed by a two-run double by cleanup man Denney Philippon.
Haggerty added runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 4-3 lead entering the bottom of the fifth, when NAPA finally jumped back into the score column with an RBI sacrifice fly by Darryl Vannah, scoring Clay Phillips, who had taken advantage of a walk in his at bat.
NAPA then fell behind 5-4 in the top of the sixth before plating four runs on four hits and a walk, all without recording an out. The hit parade included an RBI triple by Kevin Pontbriand and RBI singles by Wayne Usher, Kasey Clark and Phillips. Haggerty showed its grit by scoring two runs in the top of the last inning, falling one short.
Pontbriand (2 for 3 with a triple, an RBI and 2 runs scored), Usher (2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored), Philippon (2 for 3 with a double, 2 RBIs and a run scored), and Clark (2 for 3 with an RBI) led the NAPA attack. Demetrius Starks (1 for 2 with a walk and 2 runs scored) and Phillips (1 for 2 with a walk, a run scored and the game winning RBI) both helped the cause.
NAPA looks to extend its season-opening run against defending league champion Gipper’s in its next game.
