Top foe targets Maine consolidation law
AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The leader of the Coalition to Save
Maine Schools says organizers hope to regenerate interest over the
summer in their referendum drive to repeal the state’s school system
consolidation law.
The Kennebec Journal reported that Skip
Greenlaw said the repeal strategy will involve persuading voters in
Maine’s larger cities and towns to support a repeal even though they
were not forced to consolidate with neighboring districts.
Greenlaw’s
comments come just days after Gov. John Baldacci signed a bill to delay
for a year the penalties that are to be imposed on the more than 100
school districts in which voters turned down plans to restructure.
