FARMINGTON – There’s still time for youngsters interested in lacrosse to participate in a new program offered by Farmington Recreation this summer.

Starting Monday, July 7, through July 30, students entering grades 4-6 can participate in an introductory camp that will teach the basics of lacrosse.

Skills over physical contact will be emphasized when noncontact lacrosse will be offered on Monday and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hippach Field. Technical drills such as catching, throwing and scooping up ground balls will be offered followed by a rotation of round robin play led by director Kenneth Averill.

Sticks, gloves and helmets will be provided by the Recreation Department. Costs for registration are $20 for Farmington residents and $25 for out-of-town residents.

The popular Paul Blauvelt Baseball Program, now it its 21st year, begins on Monday, July 7. It offers players an opportunity to work on and improve their games through baseball skills instruction.

Ages 5 to 15 can participate in this program named in memory of 1985 Mt. Blue baseball team co-captain Paul Blauvelt.

Director of the program this year is current varsity baseball coach at Mt. Blue High School, Craig Collins with assistance from two of his Mt. Blue players, Bobby Duley and Chris Reynolds.

There are four divisions based on skill development in the program, the Farm League Division for ages 5 to 8 focuses on techniques for throwing, catching and hitting.

The Cal Ripken Beginner Division, ages 8 and 9, concentrates on upgrading basic skills while the Cal Ripken Advanced Division for ages 10 and 11 provided more practice to help develop the player’s game.

The Babe Ruth League division for ages 12-15 prepared players for the physical adjustment to games at the next level.

The program runs through July 30 on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Each league meets for an hour starting at 9 a.m. ending with Babe Ruth from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Cost is $15 for Farmington residents and $20 for out-of-town residents.

A third program Pre-Season Soccer Camp for ages 6-14 will run from August 4 to 7 and is devoted to skills development. Directed by Fred Conlogue, this program will be held Monday through Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Hippach Field. Cost is $12 for Farmington residents and $16 for out-of-town residents.
