BIDDEFORD – Bates College used goals by Greg Nelson and Patrick Grater in the opening half to record a non-conference 2-0 shutout over the University of New England in men’s soccer action Wednesday.

Nelson got the Bobcats (4-2) on the scoreboard at the 4:53 mark when he headed a cross from Kyle Rushton into the back of the net for his team-leading fifth tally.

Bates added an insurance goal less than two minutes later when Grater picked up a failed UNE clear attempt and ripped a high shot past Nor’easter goalkeeper Jon Mango. Aaron Schleicher made three saves in net to notch the shutout.

Mango finished with eight saves for the Nor’easters (1-6-1).

Colby 1, USM 0

GORHAM – Jamie Waters one-timed a rolling ball from just outside the 18-yard area into the left side of the net to lift Colby to a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in men’s soccer action.

Josh Kahane made three saves in net for the Mules (2-1-2) to earn his second shutout of the season.

Women’s soccer

St. Joe’s 3, UMF 0

STANDISH – Megan Willette turned in a pair of goals to lead St. Joseph’s to a 3-1 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in womens’ soccer.

Michelle Crisp netted the game-winner for the Monks (5-3) in the sixth minute of the second half off a feed from Heather Stanger to put the game away.

Monica Cuda had two saves to preserve the shutout, while Alix Raymond made four saves for Farmington (5-3).

Field hockey

Eastern Connecticut 2, USM 1

MANSFIELD, Conn. – Emily Eshenfelder and Stephanie Mongelli each scored a goal to lead the Eastern Connecticut field hockey team to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday.

Eshefelder tallied her goal late in the first half. Mongelli increased the lead for the Warriors (2-6) to 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the 47th minute of the contest.

Caitlin Albert drove in the Huskies’ (3-6) lone goal to cut the lead in half with under a minute remaining in the contest.
