BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College and St. Joseph’s battled to a 4-4 tie in a game that was called after nine innings due to darkness and inclement weather Monday.
The Monks (27-6-1) were in control for the first seven innings, with starting pitcher Steven Stout allowed just three hits and no runs.
St. Joseph’s scored two runs in the third inning on a triple to right field by Wade Oliver, and Dustin Spiller improved the lead to 3-0 with a solo homer in the seventh.
The Polar Bears (21-5-1) battled back, and deadlocked the game with three runs in the eighth.
Jon Koperniak tied the game with a triple to right field that soared over the head of right-fielder Chris Doughty.
Each team traded a run in the ninth frame, but Bowdoin catcher Mike Buckley threw out Brian Schools attempting to steal second base to keep the deficit at a single run to keep the Polar Bears from losing outright.
MIT 8, Bates 6
LEWISTON – Senior Wayne Duggan hit a two-run homer as part of a 4-for-5, five-RBI day at the plate as MIT snapped a four-game losing streak with an 8-6 victory over Bates on Monday.
Duggan also pitched two innings of perfect relief to earn the save on the mound for the Engineers (15-10). Warren Bates went 4-for-5 for MIT, scoring three runs.
Brian Mahoney had three hits for the Bobcats (9-12), including a triple, and Erik Hood knocked in three runs.
Softball
Maine 3, Hartford 0
ORONO – Sarah Bennis and Jenna Balent combined to pitch a four-hit shutout Monday to lead the University of Maine softball team to a 3-0 win over Hartford in the finale of a 3-game series.
Molly McKinney led Maine offensive attack with a pair of hits and a run scored. Marguerite Soule and Dana Grimm each had an RBI for the Black Bears (30-15).
Bennis, Maine’s starter struck out six batters in four innings of work.
Womens’ Lacrosse
Colby 19, Southern Maine 1
GORHAM – Allie Libby had a goal and six assists as nationally-ranked Colby pounded the University of Southern Maine 19-1 in women’s lacrosse Monday.
Ten different players scored in the rout, lead by Kate Sheridan and Heather Nickerson with three goals apiece as the Mules built up a 14-0 lead at the half.
Elizabeth Ghilardi dished out four assists for the Colby (12-2).
Ashley Dyer had the lone goal of the match for the Huskies (5-8).
