DETROIT – Wilfredo Ledezma struck out five in 5 2-3 innings as the replacement starter for Justin Verlander, and the Detroit Tigers took advantage of an error by C.C. Sabathia to beat the Cleveland Indians 1-0 Sunday and complete a three-game sweep.

Making his first major league start since June 4, 2005, Ledezma (2-1) allowed six hits and two walks. Jason Grilli, Jamie Walker, Fernando Rodney and Todd Jones finished, with Jones getting three outs for his 31st save in 34 chances.

Verlander (14-4), who has a tired arm, is scheduled to start Friday against the White Sox.

With their major league-leading 13th shutout of the season, the Tigers completed their 11th series sweep of the year.

Craig Monroe hit a two-out RBI single in the fifth off Sabathia (8-8), who was charged with an error when he failed to field Brandon Inge’s leadoff bunt.

Twins 11, Royals 5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Jason Bartlett had a career-high five hits as the Twins completed a four-game sweep and tied a Minnesota record with their eighth consecutive road win.

The Twins, who overcame a 4-1 deficit, had 22 hits, their most since getting 23 against the Royals on June 19, 2003.

Jason Tyner had four singles, and Michael Cuddyer had three hits, including a two-run homer. Luis Castillo, Torii Hunter and Mike Redmond also had three hits apiece for the Twins, who won for the 30th time in 39 times overall.

Dennys Reyes (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Mike Smith, who made his first major league appearance since Sept. 28, 2002. Todd Wellemeyer (0-2) was the loser.

Yankees 6, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE – Derek Jeter hit the first of four solo homers against Rodrigo Lopez (8-12), and the Yankees opened a season-high two-game lead over Boston in the AL East.

Jason Giambi hit his 32nd home run, matching his total from last year, and finished 3-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera also connected for the Yankees, who took two of three from Baltimore and are 11-1-1 in their last 13 series.

Jaret Wright (8-6) allowed one run, five hits and four walks in six innings, and Mariano Rivera got four outs for his 28th save.

Blue Jays 7, White Sox 3

TORONTO – A.J. Burnett (3-5) allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings, helping Toronto stop a seven-game losing streak, its longest in four years.

Jose Contreras (10-4) lost for the fourth time in his last five starts, giving up five runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings.

Angels 9, Rangers 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Garret Anderson and Vladimir Guerrero hit three-run homers for the Angels.

Joe Saunders (3-0) was staked to a quick 8-0 lead and allowed three singles over seven innings, striking out six and walked two. Kevin Gregg followed with two-hit relief, allowing a ninth-inning sacrifice fly to Gerald Laird.

Texas starter Adam Eaton (1-2) was ejected by plate umpire Rob Drake with two outs in the first inning. One pitch after Anderson’s 10th homer of the season, Eaton threw a 90-mph fastball behind Rivera.
