LEWISTON – The L and A Veterans Council has announced that Major General John W. Libby, adjutant of the Maine National Guard and a native of Lewiston, as grand marshal for the Memorial Day parade on Saturday, May 27.

The 195th Army National Guard Band from Bangor will also be on hand for the parade, which will leave at 9:30 a.m. from Kennedy Park.

The parade will go through Lewiston and around Platz Plaza in Auburn and return to Lewiston, ending at Veterans Memorial Park for the ceremony at around 10:30 a.m.

Area residents are invited to attend the parade and thank the National Guard and Reserves who will be in the parade, including the 133rd Regiment. All organizations who wish to take part should register with Chairman Bert Dutil by calling 786-2305.

Following the memorial ceremony, the council will unveil the 10th stone, which carries 216 names. The council has received names for the 11th stone. To get an application, contact Gerry Cain at 782-6621 or Dutil.

Members of the L and A Veterans Council are American Legion Post 22 of Lewiston, American Legion Post 153 of Auburn, Franco American War Veterans and Auxiliary Post 31, Marine Corps League Central Maine Detachment, Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW Post and Auxiliary 1603 of Auburn, VFW Post 9150 of Lewiston and the Women Marines Association.

The 195th Army National Guard Band performs at military and civilian events throughout Maine and the eastern United States. In recent months, the band has participated in ceremonies as Maine guardsmen have been deployed overseas. The band has also been on hand for the homecoming celebrations on their return.

The band members come from all over the state and from a variety of civilian occupations. The band is under the direction of Warrant Officer Brady S. Harris of Brewer.
