OQUOSSOC – Members of the Rangeley Region Guides’ and Sportsmen’s Association held the annual meeting July 15 at the clubhouse on Old Ski Way Road following a 5:30 p.m. cookout- potluck meal.
Officers were all re-elected for another one-year term: Don Palmer, president; Rusty Harvey, vice president; Elaine Holcombe, secretary; and Doug Rose, treasurer. Ray Franson, Mac Dudley, Roger Noyes, Tony Marcellino and Dick Moore were elected to the board of directors.
It was reported that the Strawberry Festival raised $3,400. Chairwoman Carol Harvey thanked all who made it a success. Mac and Steve Dudley have cleared an area for enlarging the parking lot.
Kirby Holcombe gave an update on the Cupsuptic and South Bog Stream restoration projects. Club members have been working with State Biologist Forrest Bonney since 2002, measuring, studying and restoring the South Bog, a vital part of the Rangeley Lake fishery.
The eighth annual Sporting Heritage Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, on the club’s grounds. Demonstrations of fly casting and tying, moose and turkey calling, archery and shooting, plus hands-on activities for all ages are being planned. Vendors and foods will be available. The traditional silent auction will take place in the clubhouse.
The evening’s speaker was Scott Olsen, executive director, Maine Conservation School, who discussed the camping experience available at the Bryant Pond campsite for ages 8 to 14 in Maine. The ecology camp is run by the Conservation Education Foundation of Maine with more than 20 on its staff. It is supported by more than 300 sponsors and donors. The association will again send two of the more than 100 campers for a one-week experience this summer.
An under-the-tent surf and turf dinner/picnic will precede the club’s next meeting on Thursday, Aug. 19. Chef Bob Allen will offer his rib eye or salmon steak for $20 a serving. For the children, hot dogs and hamburgers will be free. The meals are by ticket only and are available at River’s Edge or by calling Bo at 864-2129 or John Thomas at 864-5360. Reservations must be made before Aug. 13. Following the dinner, retired auctioneer Bob Blass will conduct a live auction.
