PARIS – A new training program for volunteers who want to help during local emergencies has attracted people with interests varying from ham radio to saving animals. Classes begin Jan. 4.
The program, called CERT for Community Emergency Response Team, was launched last fall by Scott Parker, director of Oxford County Emergency Management Agency.
Parker said he is wrapping up the first training session for ham radio operators and will be starting the next training for a group of people with broader interests.
The seven classes will total 20 hours and end March 1. After the volunteers receive basic training in a range of areas from fire safety to search and rescue, Parker said they can specialize, for example, in animal rescue.
Parker said 15 people have signed up for the class, about half of whom are interested in being part of the animal rescue team, and enrollment is still open.
