FARMINGTON – The Healthy Community Coalition will sponsor its second annual Veggie Madness restaurant contest from 3 to 4 p.m. at Moonlight Madness on Friday, July 30, on Broadway.

Local restaurants are being asked to submit vegetarian entrees or side dishes. This year’s judges will include Buzz Davis, a community member; Roz Kerr, a member of the Nutrition Task Force; Dr. Dora Ann Mills, director of the state Bureau of Health and a Farmington native; and state Sen. Chandler Woodcock.

To ensure that the entries are healthy as well as tasty, the restaurants have been given guidelines based on recommendations from the American Heart Association and the American Dietetic Association.

They include having a cup of a vegetable per serving and being reasonably low in fat and salt. Entries also will be judged on flavor and eye-appeal.

After the judges try each entry, the public will be invited to sample the dishes and offer their comments.

Last year’s Veggie Madness winner was the Granary BrewPub and Restaurant with Portabella Caprese al Presto. The Maine Dairy Council then invited Granary owners Rochelle and Tom Marcellino to participate in a cook-off contest at the Blaine House, which they also won.

Other restaurants that participated last year include Athena’s Restaurant, the New Great Wall Chinese Restaurant and Soup For You Cafe.

The contest is sponsored by the coalition’s Nutrition Task Force. The goal is to promote increased consumption of vegetables and fruits. In Franklin County, 72 percent of adults don’t consume the recommended five servings of vegetables and fruits a day, according to the task force.

The coalition’s Mobile Health Unit will be at the corner of High Street and Broadway. The public is welcome to come sample the entries from 3:30 to 4 p.m. The health unit will also offer blood pressure checks, low-cost bike helmets for kids and a Veggie Toss for kids from 2 to 5 p.m.
