LEWISTON — Getting the Bates Mill ready for Baxter Brewing Co. has Museum LA looking for new storage space.

Museum Director Rachel Desgrosseilliers said she needs up to 2,000 square  feet to store old drill presses, lathes, pipe fitting equipment that was used to keep the mill equipment at Bates Manufacturing up and running.

“It’s all the old equipment in the machine shop that was used to maintain the looms and everything else,” she said. “And very often, if the company needed something that wasn’t manufactured, they made it in the machine shop themselves.”

The machine shop was in the basement of the Mill 1 building, which runs along Canal Street. Baxter Brewing Co. is currently renovating part of Building 1A, behind the museum and down from Mill Street.

“They need that old machine shop for their storage, so we want to make space for them,” she said.

The museum is working to develop a new area at the old Camden Yarn Mill but that building won’t be ready for while.

“So we need someone to donate some space until we are ready to move into our new building,” she said.

Cote Crane has agreed to move the equipment for the museum Friday, she said.

“Now we just need someplace to take it,” she said.

People with suggestions should call the museum at 333-3881.
