In response to invitations written on brown paper, members of the Social Hour Club met at Mrs. J. B. Hodgkin’s and were delightfully entertained at a poverty party on Tuesday afternoon. Very satisfying refreshments were served in tin dippers and broken dishes to the half-starved guests sitting around on wooden benches. The table was dressed in its best red cloth and real fringed newspaper napkins. Music and other entertainment were enjoyed by all in conclusion.
50 years ago, 1961
Hayward Carsley Jr., assistant principal at Edward Little High School, has announced that reports of a new hot-rod club, The Untouchables, are fictitious.
According to a report received by The Sun, the new club was comprised of Edward Little High School students. Carsley, whose name was given as the club adviser, received calls from mothers stating that their sons were at home at the time of the so-called organizational meeting.
Carsley said that to his knowledge, there is currently no school-approved hot-rod club at ELHS.

A Lisbon Street bar, Mary’s Tavern, has become the third Lewiston nightspot targeted for closure by city officials within a year.
Mary’s may lose its liquor license because of too many police calls over the past year. The City Council will hold a public hearing on Police Chief Gregory C. Hanscome’s recommendation Tuesday night.
