I believe that most of the elected officials in Augusta should be impeached, not the governor. They pass laws that give the immigrants everything and want the taxpayers in Maine to pay for it for 24 months — everything they want. Why don’t legislators just give immigrants a lifetime of no taxes and double mine? […]
Letters
Letters to the editor of the Sun Journal.
M. Kertzman: Climate change is real
I write in response to the letter from Michael Brakey, “NOAA fudging Maine climate data” (July 15). Brakey makes reference to the fact that Penobscot Bay froze over and there were very cold temperatures in Maine as proof that the planet is not getting warmer. Unfortunately, the cold in Maine is not indicative of a […]
D. Bulger: Concerning the ‘right of way’
In response to the article “Robert Hamm fights to keep ATVs off his Mexico land” (Sun Journal, July 14), unfortunately, it may be Hamm who is not respecting the law. Like most jurisdictions that inherited British Common Law, Maine recognizes “adverse title.” That is the situation where a trespasser can acquire property rights if the […]
B. Abbott: Nursing home staff give loving care
This is in response to the over-the-top ProPublica story about misuse of coumadin in some nursing homes which was printed prominently on the Sun Journal’s front page and continued to another practically entire page (July 14). The story included artwork and highlighted the lack of action at some nursing homes that failed to monitor patients’ […]
R. Farnsworth: Man of energy and vision
As a 30-year resident and current property owner in Lewiston, I write in enthusiastic support of Ben Chin’s candidacy for mayor. I have known Chin since his undergraduate days at Bates and have long admired his intelligence and his capacity to consider varieties of perspective. His years of hard work for the Maine People’s Alliance […]
J. Tierney: Dealing with teenage births
Maine learned how to deal with poverty and welfare back in the early 1980s, then reallocated the resources to the more politically acceptable ASPIRE program as administrations changed. Colorado reinvented the solution, as reported in the New York Times on July 7: “Colorado Finds Startling Success in Effort to curb Teenage Births.” Isabel Sawhill, an […]
M. Cayer: Lewiston needs engaged community
This is in response to the letter from Bob Pelletier (July 14) stating his belief that it is “time for change.” Pelletier suggests that all Lewiston councilors should be replaced. I have served the constituents of Ward 6 for nearly six years. In that time, we have reduced our operating budget significantly. We have reduced […]
M.J. Newell: Freedoms under attack
What has happened to free speech in this country? It seems that there is something that offends someone every day. The Confederate flag, after all these years, now has become a symbol of unspeakable evil. And since the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, a Democrat in Congress wants husband-and-wife wording replaced with spouse. Ridiculous. […]
R. Lorrain: Not afraid to ask questions
I encourage Paris residents to go to the polls and vote for Mike Risica for selectman on July 23. During my time on the Paris Selectboard, I had the pleasure of working with Risica through his involvement on the Budget Committee and Planning Board. He is always engaged in the process, asks well-informed questions and […]
L. Gilbert Sr.: An ambassador for Lewiston
I give my full support to Ben Chin for mayor of Lewiston. He is a graduate of Bates College and has been working in this community for 10 years. He has worked in support of health care for all, higher wages, voting rights, environmental issues and the list goes on. With a baby on the […]
