COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Rookie Pat Noonan scored in the 54th minute to lift the New England Revolution into a 1-1 tie with the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night.
Noonan outjumped Crew defender Chad McCarty at the near post and headed a shot past goalkeeper Tom Presthus. Taylor Twellman set up Noonan by heading Joe Franchino’s free kick from the left side into the box.
Jeff Matteo – making his first career start – gave the Crew a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute with a left-footed shot from 12 yards. Matteo intercepted a clearing attempt and dribbled around Daounda Kante into the box. It was Columbus’ first goal in almost a month, a span of 253 minutes.
The Crew’s Edson Buddle had the best chance in overtime but sent an open shot from the edge of the box over the goal. Columbus had several chances near the end of regulation, including Brian Maisonneuve’s miss by inches in the 90th minute. The Crew couldn’t get off a shot on a 3-on-1 break in the 89th minute, and six minutes earlier Buddle lost control of the ball on a breakaway.
New England (5-5-7), playing its fourth game in 11 days, snapped a two-game losing streak.
The Revolution are two points ahead of the Crew for third place.

Columbus (5-6-5) has three ties and two wins in its last 10 games.
