OXFORD – Ricky Rolfe has an opportunity to make Oxford Plains Speedway history on several fronts Saturday night.

Rolfe, a 20-year racing veteran from Albany Township, could become the first rookie since the speedway started keeping official records in 1964 to win the championship in its top division.

As the Pro Stock point leader by 25 points over Andy Shaw, Rolfe needs no more than a 13th-place finish in the feature to clinch the title in the final regular-season event at the track.

Qualifying heats on Key Bank Championship Night begin at 7 p.m.

Rolfe would also become the first driver to win championships in back-to-back seasons in two different divisions. He would join Leland Kangas, Jon Lizotte, Alan Wilson and Ben Rowe as the only drivers to win the crown in multiple classes, and he’d be the first Late Model Stock champion to capture a Pro Stock crown.

Shaw is seeking his first track or series championship of any kind. He’s a former Rookie of the Year in touring series competition.

A third driver, Billy Whorff, is mathematically in the hunt, 39 points behind Rolfe.

Three other division titles remain in the balance headed into the finale. The closest battle is in Late Model Stock, where Travis Adams of Canton leads Corey Morgan of Lewiston by 11. Carey Martin needs to start the Limited Sportsman feature to win his record fourth championship in the division.

Peter Hafford leads Bob Crocker by 24 in Strictly Stock. Crocker could match Rolfe’s feat on two levels if he rallies to win it.

In addition to being a rookie, Crocker was last year’s champion in the Big Apple Summer Series Outlaw division.
