WHITEWATER, Wis. – Bates College senior Liz Wanless captured the NCAA Div. III nation championship Saturday in the shot put, breaking the meet record and surpassing the qualifying standard for the U.S. Olympic Trials.

Wanless, from Belleville, Ill., who was the national runnerup last year, fired the shot 53 feet, 2 inches, beating her personal best and Bates College record by more than a foot. That distance surpassed the Olympic Trial standard by by roughly an inch.

Here winning throw surpassed runnerup Robyn Jarocki if Wisconsin-Oshkosh by more than five feet.

Bates sophomore Kelly Godsey, a sophomore from Parker, Colo., earned her second All America honors in as many days, by placing fourth in the shot put with a toss of 45-1. Godsey was second in the 20-pound weight throw Friday.

The Bates duo accounted for all of the Bobcats 22 points.

Men’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 9, Williams 5

BRUNSWICK – The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team opened the season with a 9-5 win over Williams College at Howard Ryan Field in Brunswick Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears (1-0) took a 2-1 lead after one quarter on goals by Alex Weaver and Ford Gurall. Three second quarter goals from Phil Stern, Joe Andrasko, and Vinay Kashyap gave the Bears a lead that they would not relinquish.

The Ephs (0-1) were led by Matt Bahright who tallied a pair of goals in the loss.

Grant White turned back seven shots in goal to record the win.

Middlebury 12, Colby 5

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Charley Howe found the back of the net four times Saturday afternoon, and Mike Saraceni added a pair of goals to lead Middlebury College to a 12-5 win over Colby College.

The Panthers (1-0) took a 3-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and built it to 10-2 heading into the final quarter to secure the season opening victory.

The White Mules (0-1) were led by Joshua Cleaver who scored a hat trick.

Trinity 9, Bates 8

CHELSEA, Mass. – Curtis Kahn scored early in double overtime to nudge Trinity to a 9-8 victory over Bates in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Kahn scored the game-winner from 15 feet away on an assist from James Skiff, while recording four goals in the contest. The Bantams (1-0) fired off six goals in the third quarter to take an 8-2 lead.

The Bobcats (0-1) responded with six goals of thir own in the fourth frame to send the game into overtime. Mark Boccard led Bates with three goals, while Peter Friedman added a pair of goals and three assists. Matt Bognacki chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Peter Kazarian made 17 saves in the first three quarters for Bates, while Peter Boston added a pair in the ensuing three frames. Geoff Shaw made 11 saves for Trinity to register the win.

Women’s lacrosse

Bowdoin 14, New England 4

BRUNSWICK – Hilary Abrams peppered four goals to assist Bowdoin as the Polar Bears took their season-opener over New England College in women’s lacrosse action Saturday afternoon.

Angela King and Shoshana Kuriloff recorded three goals apiece, while Colleen McDonald had a pair of goals and assists as part of the Polar Bear (1-0) attack.

The Nor’easters (0-1) were led by Makaila Sinclair, who registered a pair of goals.

Kendall Cox made five saves for Bowdoin, while Laura Bishop stopped 14 for the New England College in the loss.
