FARMINGTON – This summer 28 children ages 4 to 10 in Franklin County will have a summer camp experience due to the work of several area volunteers.

The Western Mountain Summer Camp Scholarship Fund, the brain child of Barb Marshall, has provided more than $1,600 in scholarship support to area children this year. Proceeds from the annual Kids Stuff Sale are used for the fund. The sale was held at the Old South Church in the spring, with 100 percent of the proceeds going in to the fund.

“Barb and her volunteers are to be commended for the many hours they spend planning for and conducting the annual used toy sale,” said Steve Russell, executive director of the Franklin County Children’s Task Force, event co-sponsor.

According to Russell, applicants for the fund will attend several area camps, including the UMF Summer Daze and Prep Camps, Young Writers Camp, Anne Mallet’s Bug Camp, the Mount Blue Basketball and Farmington Soccer camps.

In the three years of the program, Marshall and her volunteers have raised more than $2,600, which has enabled 39 children to attend summer camp who otherwise would not have had the opportunity.

Although no more scholarships are available this year, contact the Franklin County Children’s Task Force at 778-6960 for more information.
