RUMFORD – And then there were none. Businesses at the Abbott Farm Plaza, that is.

Official word came last week that the Dollar Store, the last remaining business at the once-popular shopping center on Route 2, is planning a move to the Mexico Plaza next month.

Along with the move will come a new name, said Vera Theriault, spokeswoman for the local store. It will be known as Wardo’s, named for the chain’s New Hampshire owner, John Ward.

Ward owns about 10 Dollar Stores and Wardo’s in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.

The name change also indicates a slight change in merchandise offerings.

For most of the years the Dollar Store has been based at the Abbott Farm Plaza, all items were sold for a dollar. In recent months, higher priced items have been for sale, but all are discounted, said Theriault.

The store will move into the space formerly occupied by Viewer’s Choice, adjacent to Food City grocery store. Viewer’s Choice moved to a new mini-mall on Main Street, Mexico, a few months ago.

The move may also require hiring one additional person to the four-person staff because of the larger space and more merchandise for sale.

At its peak, Abbott Farm Plaza was home to Ames Department Store, Shop n Save, and Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, plus several smaller businesses. The home care agency moved to Dixfield earlier this year.

Both the River Valley Growth Council and the town of Rumford have been searching for a new use for the former shopping center.
