RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board is expected to take up the tax-cap issue and to begin discussion of a possible reconfiguration of kindergarten to grade five when it meets Monday.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin will present a modified version of a Maine School Management resolution opposing the Palesky tax-cap proposal scheduled for a statewide vote on Nov. 2.

The board declined to take a stance at an early September meeting. However, Hodgkin brought information to the board at the last meeting showing a potential reduction of $4 million to the SAD 43 budget if the measure passes. The modified resolution opposes the tax-cap proposal while also stating that property taxes are too high and that the Legislature must take action to relieve some of the burden.

Hodgkin will also present enrollment figures for students in kindergarten to grade five as well as information on the classroom space available for them. He said 36 classrooms are needed while 50 classrooms are available in the district’s three elementary schools.

“We’ve got to make a decision,” he said.

He said he expects any decisions or reconfigurations will likely be settled by the end of the current school year with the input of teachers, parents and administration.

The board will also act on a first reading of a proposed policy and procedure that would allow students to take laptop computers home, and act on rewritten job descriptions for the district’s secretaries.
