Ice cream social

PERU – Worthley Pond Association invites the public to a free ice cream social from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 19, at The Bus on Greenwoods Road. This annual event provides the opportunity for area people to get together and enjoy a summer treat.

Bandstand concert

BETHEL – Singer and songwriter Tom Dean will be in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, on the Bethel Common. The Mahoosuc Arts Council Bethel Bandstand Concert Series sponsors his performance.

The former member of the folk/rock group Devonsquare wrote “Walking on Ice.” Dean has assembled a melange of songs that politely reference the genres of light-folk, blues, country and pop.

The Bethel Bandstand’s final concert will feature the roots, rock and country music of The Wicked Sharps on Aug. 27.

The concerts run 60 to 90 minutes and are free to the public. The rain site is Bingham Auditorium on Church Street at Gould Academy.

Church helps shelter

DIXFIELD – This year, the Seventh-day Adventist Church chose the Hearts of Hope Shelter as its mission project.

The Hearts of Hope Shelter is a local organization that provides emergency housing for women and children. The shelter is dependent on donations and volunteer help.

The church held a lawn sale in June and raised $460 for the shelter. In addition to the Adventurers Club for small children, which is sponsored by the church, raised $275 for the shelter.

Poet laureate reading

RUMFORD – Betsy Sholl, current Maine Poet Laureate, will do a poetry reading at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 20, at the Pennacook Art Center on Congress Street.

Sholl has published six books of poetry. Among her awards are a fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts, and two Maine Writer’s Fellowships, the AWP Prize in Poetry and the Felix Pollak Prize. She teaches at the University of Southern Maine and in the MFA of Vermont College.

Tom Fallon of Rumford will also be reading. He is the former Maine Times editor and Maine Writers and Publishing Alliance director. He has been awarded two Maine Arts Commission grants. He hosts Maine Literature Daily and Maine Poetry, Internet literary resources.

Society meeting

MEXICO – The Mexico Historical Society will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Historical House on 3 Oxford St. for a hot dish supper.

Members will be at Wal-Mart on Friday, Aug. 25, to sell raffle tickets on the jewel box quilt that will be raffled Sept. 26.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Class of ’49 luncheon

RUMFORD – Members of the Stephens High Class of 1949 will gather at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 23, at the Former Abbott Plaza in East Rumford. From there, attendees will car pool to the Howard Pond summer home of Harry and Fran Burns.
