GARDINER – A young Gardiner girl, who suffered a head injury Saturday afternoon after falling off an all-terrain vehicle, remains hospitalized at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine Warden Service spokesman Mark Latti said early Saturday evening.
“She’s doing well, but they want to keep her for a few days for observation,” he said of 10-year-old Anastasia Pelletier.
An MMC nursing supervisor contacted early Saturday evening said Pelletier was in serious condition, while a woman who first answered the hospital phone said the child was in the special-care unit.
Based on information he obtained from investigating Game Warden Bob Decker, Latti said Pelletier and three other similar-aged children were riding on a full-size 1999 Honda ATV being driven by a 9-year-old boy up a level driveway at 82 Moody St. off Route 24 when the 2:30 p.m. accident happened.
“She fell off the rear fender on which she was riding. She wasn’t wearing a helmet and banged her head, hitting hard, and there was swelling from the head injury, so they wanted to take her to the hospital,” he said.
A LifeFlight helicopter landed at nearby Gardiner Elementary School off Route 24, picking up the child and taking her to the Portland hospital.
Latti said no charges would be filed because the accident happened on private property. Adults were present. He did not have the names and ages of the other children.
