ORONO (AP) – Ron Whitcomb completed 17 of 21 passes with a pair of touchdowns on Saturday to lead Maine to a 30-3 victory over Northeastern.

Whitcomb threw for 227 total yards.

Northeastern (3-6, 2-4 Atlantic 10) was shut out offensively down after Mat Johnson booted a 42-yard field goal in the first quarter.

Maine (6-3, 5-1) scored in the first quarter on Arel Gordon’s 4-yard run. Gordon accounted for all of Maine’s scoring in the second quarter, hauling in 30-yard and 73-yard passes from Whitcomb.

Teron Allen scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter and the final score came on a fourth-quarter safety by Matt King.

Whitcomb said the win, coming after a disappointing 3-0 loss a week earlier to Rhode Island, gives Maine a lift going into next weekend’s game against Massachusetts.

“We’re going to UMass and we’re going to be some hungry Black Bears,” Whitcomb said.
