1. LSU 6-0 (Last week: 1)

That was close.

2. Ohio State 6-0 (3)

Beating everyone on their schedule. Let’s leave it at that.

3. California 6-0 (4)

Were better off as the “other” Pac-10 power. Let’s see how they handle being top dog.

4. Oklahoma 5-1 (7)

National title hopes not over by a longshot.

5. South Florida 5-0 (8)

Don’t make too much of the close win against Florida Atlantic; Bulls deserved a break.

6. West Virginia 5-1 (9)

Capable of self-destructing against anyone.

7. Florida 4-2 (6)

If the Gators played LSU this week, I’d pick ’em again.

8. South Carolina 5-1 (11)

Probably better than most of the teams ranked higher, in reality.

9. Boston College 6-0 (10)

UMass Bowling Green yes, Notre Dame is a slight step up.

10. USC 4-1 (2)

The thought of any football team being favored by 40 in a game is stupid.

11. Arizona State 6-0; 12. Oregon 5-1; 13. Virginia Tech 5-1; 14. Kentucky 5-1; 15. Missouri 5-0; 16. Cincinnati 6-0; 17. Florida State 4-1; 18. Illinois 5-1; 19. Auburn 4-2; 20. Wisconsin 5-1; 21. Hawaii 6-0; 22. Texas 4-2; 23. Georgia 4-2; 24. Kansas 5-0; 25. Tennessee 3-2.

Dropping out of Top 25: Nebraska, Purdue, Rutgers, Clemson.

Flatline Five

5. Idaho – Suddenly that one-sided loss to Southern Cal doesn’t look so impressive.

4. Louisiana-Lafayette – Tell me, geography buffs, which one did they used to be? SE? NW? SW?

3. Utah State – Give ’em credit for not scheduling an automatic win somewhere.

2. North Texas – Ask them now if they’re happy about their move to I-A.

1. Florida International – Add Florida Atlantic to the list of teams that are better in the Sunshine State.
