GREENE – Androscoggin Junior Grange was reorganized on April 22, with 14 children present. They will meet at 6 p.m. the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Androscoggin Grange Hall.
Karen Flagg will be in charge of the meetings with the assistance of various parents. There will be several more children joining, but due to school vacation they had other obligations. Kiersten Leclerc was chosen as junior master, with other positions being filled at a later meeting.
Some of the earliest recollections of many rural children are of Grange meetings that they attended with their parents. From the beginning of the Grange, children have taken part in the literary programs. The first Junior Grange was organized in Texas in 1888.
Today the Junior Grange is well organized and has an established record of achievement.
The original Androscoggin Juvenile Grange 185 disbanded in 1949. With the help of the children and parents, Androscoggin Grange members hope to keep the new Junior Grange going.
To become a Junior member, the child must be between ages of 5 and 14 and must not be a member of a Subordinate Grange. There are three levels in the contests and merit badges so that each child will compete in their own age bracket.
