BUCKFIELD – The Western Foothills Land Trust will sponsor a morning walk, bike or jog along the historic Buckfield railroad bed on Sunday, June 15.
The railroad bed is now a multi-use trail, the ITS 89. Participants will see South Pond while learning about the overall 1,279-acre South Pond Conservation Area project.
Hikers will meet at 8 a.m. at the start of the trail off the John Ellingwood Road, which runs south from Route 117 to the town maintenance garage. They will be able to explore any or all of the 2.5 miles through the conservation land before returning to the trail head.
The five-mile round trip is flat with good footing. Areas of the rail bed are still deep cinders and wide mountain bike tires are best if riding. Water will be available at the trail head. A $10 donation for the South Pond stewardship endowment is requested.
