LEWISTON – Traditionally, Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District has offered annual sales of compost bins, rain barrels and native conservation plants as fundraisers.
Those wishing may learn more about the sales and obtain a copy of the order form at www.androscogginswcd.net on the fundraiser page or call Office Manager Jane Heikkinen at 753-9400, ext. 400.
Due to their popularity, the district is offering rain barrels again. It has recycled heavy duty plastic rain barrels in terracotta, blue, black and gray. Orders for a 55 gallon rain barrel are being accepted through Friday, Aug. 22, at a cost of $75, with a pick-up date in mid September. Customers placing orders will be notified of the pick-up time and place with confirmation of the order.
As storms continue to pass through the area, erosion from runoff is a concern. The district has made the decision to accommodate clients dealing with the issue or who want to do a major planting of 10 or more plants.
It will fill orders from the spring native conservation plant sale with no increase in cost. The sale list and order form are on the Web site. Perennials are not available.
Orders will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 1, with a pick-up in mid to late September. Customers placing an order will be notified of the time and place with the confirmation of the order.
The district fundraising sales prices will rise in 2009. It is offering a special deal on the 2009 compost bin package, retailed at more than $125. The package will be available for pick-up in the spring and includes a compost bin, kitchen scrap pail and wingdigger (compost turner) for a cost of $80 if ordered and prepaid before Jan. 1, 2009. After that, the cost will increase.
Customers will be notified of the pick-up time and place once those details are confirmed.
Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District receives 17 percent of its operating budget from Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties and the Maine Department of Agriculture.
The remaining 83 percent comes from grants, fundraising sales or charitable contributions from individuals, local businesses or organizations. Donations are welcome.
