100 years ago, 1910

When it comes to naming the charming women on the American stage, one naturally and as a matter of course leads off with Miss Billie Burke. Miss Burke is remarkably endowed with that wonderful something that some people call charm, others magnetism — that something that comes out over the footlights and literally grips the hearts of the audience. She comes to the Empire Theatre on Tuesday evening, April 12 in “Mrs. Dot.”

50 years ago, 1960

More than 200 persons attended the first coronation ball sponsored by the Elliott Avenue Playground Inc. last Friday night at Sons of Italy Hall. The royal pair, King Paul Lemieux and Queen Jackie Lemay, was crowned by Lewiston Mayor Emile Jacques. The ceremonies were opened with a drill by the Crimson Lancer color guard, and a record hop followed. The first ball to be sponsored by the Elliott Avenue group was termed a huge success. The event followed the playground’s annual winter carnival.


25 years ago, 1985

Androscoggin Home Health Services Board President Marie Jonaitis, Senior Vice President Betsy Perry and Program Director Betsy Garnett are attending the National association for Home Care’s Third Annual Legislative Conference in Washington D.C..

The conference will feature major addresses on home-care issues by Senator Bill Bradley and Congressmen Leon Panetta and Barney Frank, and it is expected to draw hundreds of professional home-care providers.
