AUBURN — A prisoner at Androscoggin County Jail who hanged himself over the weekend was identified as George Magee.

Magee, 53, of Lewiston had been jailed on violation of probation. He allegedly had contact with minor children where he had been staying with a woman, a violation of conditions of his probation. He had been convicted of unlawful sexual contact and unlawful sexual touching.

While awaiting initial appearance in Androscoggin County Superior Court last week, Magee fainted. He was carried out of the courtroom by corrections officers and taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He was returned to the jail shortly afterward.

Investigators from the Maine Department of Corrections were at the jail Monday. Maine State Police were at the jail on Saturday, also investigating the circumstances surrounding Magee’s death.

The investigation is standard procedure to determine how an individual under observation could succeed in such an act. Corrections officers inside the jail discovered the man Saturday afternoon after he hanged himself with pieces of a ripped bed sheet. The man was not classified as a suicide risk, but he was under observation because corrections officers suspected he was not taking his prescribed medication.
