Rumford upends Dixfield in PTL finale

DIXFIELD — Chris Cayer and Corey Stairs each had multiple hits and scored twice to lead the offense, and Mark Palmer pitched a three-hitter as Rumford came away with an 11-1 win over Dixfield in PTL action.

It was the regular-season finale for the Cardinals, who completed a season sweep over the rival Diamondbacks.

Terry Collins singled leading off the second, but Palmer induced Hart Daley into a double play. Palmer retired the next nine batters.

Dixfield had a few chances, but was unable to string things together. Ryan Lafleur singled leading off the first, but was erased on a fielders’ choice. Theriault walked, but Palmer induced Tony Umbro to fly out.

Winthrop finished season on high note

Following mid-season pitching woes, the Winthrop Red Sox found the combo of Eric Palleschi on the mound and Matt Richardson behind the plate to finish up the regular season with three consecutive wins, including an 11-4 triumph over the Green Wave of Winslow.

Palleschi helped his own cause as he doubled in two runs in the top of the first inning off pitcher Rick Doble to help stake the Sox (12-3) to an early 5-0 lead with Nate Stubbert contributing a 2-run single of his own. The Wave (8-5) got two runs back quickly with RBI hits from Ben Muniz and Shane Kibler before Winthrop opened up a 10-2 lead after six innings. Stubbert pitched the final four frames for Winthrop as Palleschi picked up his third win in as many starts. Dave Ricker Jr. and Mike House each had three hits as Winthrop touched up Wave pitching for 18 hits with Matt McCarthy, Palleschi, Ian McCarthy and Bob Cochran repeating as well. Muniz along with Andrew and Shane Kibbler, were repeaters for the Green Wave. Playoffs get underway August 22, following a week of makeup games.
